(If you wantthe written pattern, you’llfind that at the end of thispost.)So let’s go!Things you need to have & know :I used a 5mm hook and cotton yarn. You can use whatever you have on hand.You can begin each round with 3 ch in place of a tr (dc US folks) or you can use a false tr or standingstitch if you like.I like to end in the middle of corners, so instead of the standard ch 2 & ss at end of rounds, I ch 1 & joinwith dc (sc US). This just makes things a little neater, but either way will work fine. I only do thisthough if I amnotchanging colours.Round 1Begin with 4 ch made into a loop or a magic circle.UK : 8 tr, ss to first stUS : 8 dc, ss to first stRound 2UK : (tr, ch 1, tr) in eachstitchUS : (dc, ch 1, dc) in eachstitchYou might be able to seeI’ve joined with a dcinstead of ch 1 & ss.Round 3UK : (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) ineach 1 ch spaceUS : (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) ineach 1 ch spaceRound 4When you work the 3stitches along the sides, Iwant you to work into thespaces between thestitches instead of into thetops of stitches as shownhere :Stitches are worked intothe holes the needle ispointing toIf you’re not sure what a“hdtr” (htr US) is – checkout my video showinghowhere.UK : (tr, ch 2, tr) in each 2ch space, tr, hdtr, tr alongsides in between stitchesof round 3US : (dc, ch 2, dc )in each2 ch space, dc, htr, dcalong sides in betweenstitches of round 3Round 5UK : 3 dc in each 2 chspace, dc in each stitchalong the sidesUS : 3 sc in each 2 ch space, sc in each stitch along the sides.Fasten off yarn & weave in ends.Now to join them as blocks, you’llneed a small square to fill thegaps.All I’ve done is make a solidgranny using htr (hdc US).Round 1UK : 4 x 3 htr groups separated by4 x 2 ch cornersUS 4 x 3 hdc groups separated by4 x 2 ch cornersRound 2UK : (htr, ch 1, htr) in each 2 chspace, 1 htr in each stitch alongsidesUS : (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in each 2 chspace,1 hdc in each stitch alongsidesRound 3UK : 3 dc in each 2 chspace, 1 dc in each stitchalong sidesUS : 3 sc in each 2 chspace, 1 sc in each stitchalong sidesThis will give you the same stitch counts along each octagon and square side. I like to join them byplacing them right sides together and whip stitching them through the back loops only.Border?I have not come up with anything special for the border. I intend to simply dc (sc US) around theedges, keeping the indents to really show the shape of the motifs. I’ll add some pics when I finish mypiece – I’ve run out of cotton!So there you have it.
