Odinism / Ásatrú / Wotanism
The Holy Nation of Odin, Inc.
Our Belief
“Ásatrú is the spiritual path of our ancestors, and as such it deserves respect just like the
Indian peoples, the African nations, or any other group on Earth."
-Stephen McNallen
The Holy Nation of Odin, Inc. is a free association of Independent kindreds, hearths and
faith-related communities, both incarcerated and free-world, seeking to preserve and protect the
ancient faith of our ancestors. The religion is known as
Odinism/Ásatrú/Wotanism
and other
lesser known names within the Northern Tradition.
Ásatrú (OW-sah-true) means "true to the Æsir" the major deities of the Norse/Germanic
pantheon of Gods and Goddesses. Adherents of Ásatrú known as Ásatrúar or Asafolk have a
deep respect for the Germanic religious, cultural and historical heritage.
Ásatrú is a pre-Christian, native religion of the people who occupied Northern Europe and
their descendants. It is a polytheistic religion with a wide pantheon of Gods and Goddesses e.g.,
Odin, Thor, Frey & Freya, Frigga and many others. The days of the week are named in honor of
some of these Norse deities. Adherents of Ásatrú also honor the spirits and ancestors of the land
and home and have ties to the solar cycle. As such, Asafolk generally hold their ritual
ceremonies called "blótar" outside in a grove/hearth area.
Asafolk gather to form "kindreds" or "fellowships" which are legitimate religious
organizations dedicated to the preservation of their Noble past, to the continuation of their ethnic
beliefs and culture.
Ásatrúar are not a racial hate group, they are not a gang, nor are they
left or right wing extremists.
Asafolk are more concerned with celebrating their religious and
cultural heritage rather than promoting pol itical or social agendas.
Traditionally, a spiritual community leader, a gothi (priest) or gythia (priestess) is elected
by the kindred members. In the home, heads of the household lead rituals and everyone within
the community has the capacity to act as their own priest or priestess. There are legally ordained
Gothar (Priesthood), within both the Ásatrú communities, including Holy Nation of Odin, Inc.
and the Sons of Odin, 1519.
Each member is dedicated to independent learning of lore, runes, sagas and various
aspects of the religion. Each person aspires to be a virtuous leader within the community, known
for their generosity and hospitality.
The Nine Noble Virtues
The Nine Noble Virtues are a modern convention modern Asafolk try to exemplify.
Strength - Courage - Joy
Honor - Freedom - Realism
Vigor – Loyalty to kin - Honoring of one’s Ancestors

Personal Religious Items
Each Asatrúar has the right to personal religious items which include but are not limited to:
books and educational materials (e.g. the Eddas, etc.)
a personal religious medallion (Thor's Hammer, Valknut, Sunwheel, etc.)
a set of personal runes with a bag and a rune casting cloth
Blótar
"Blót" in Old Norse, meant "sacrifice, to bleed, to blood" and it is the most potent
ceremony Asafolk have for the exchange of energy between the sacred and the profane. It is a
giving and receiving of the primal life force. In this ritual Asafolk are in tune with the harmony
of Earth, Deities and Life. Just as Christians no longer give the blood sacrifice, neither do
Asafolk. Today we substitute mead or fruit juice just as the Christian uses juice or wine to
represent the blood of their deity. During the blόt, the Gothi, acting as a channel between Gods
and Man, charges the sacrifice represented by the liquid in the drinking horn. This consecrated
mead is shared by Asafolk gathered for the rite. The participants can be blessed by the mead
when the gothi an oints each person in the circle, or a libation can be poured as an offering to the
Gods, or each person might raise the horn in honor of a patron deity, departed ancestor or hero
and would take a sip from the horn after making their toast.
A blot is generally divided into nine segments. One suggested method is as follows:
1. The Hallowing - The area is consecrated and made spiritually protected.
2. The Consecration - The altar/stalli is blessed as is the sacred fire.
3. The Invocation - The gothi calls upon the deity to be honored
4. The Blessing - The gothi offers blessings of the honored deity
5. The Liturgy - Participants read poetry, verse, or prose appropriate for the occasion.
6. The Rede - The gothi offers words of wisdom
7. The Galdr - Runes appropriate for the ceremony are galdred
8. Charging the Mead - The sacrificial mead is consecrated and shared.
9. The Closing - Deities are formally thanked and released.
It should be noted that the aforementioned is a suggested format and various kindreds may opt to
vary the ceremony slightly.

Eight Major Blótar
Asafolk are on the solar cycle they commonly refer to as The Wheel of the Year. The
solstices, equinoxes and cross-quarter days are listed below. It should be noted that the dates are
approximate.
1.
Charming the Plow
(Feb. 2)
Offerings are made to charge the fertility of the soil. Asafolk are aware of the
fertile minds and the wombs of their Folk. Laborers and the fruits of their work
are also honored.

4.
Midsummer

slide into darkness that will culminate in six months at Yule.
5.

patron God of the Harvest, Freyr.
6.

The Autumnal Equinox is a time to call upon Odin as Asafolk brace themselves
for the longer nights and the cold of winter. As it is a time for harvest stores are
laid up and blessed.
7.
Feast of the Einherjar
(Nov. 11)
Held in honor of Odin's champions. Respects are paid to the heroes and
champions of Asatrú. Departed ancestors and friends are remembered and
honored.
8.
Yule/Mother Night
(Dec. 20 -23)
The Winter Solstice is celebrated as the rebirth of the Sun. From this day forward
the sun gains strength as it rises higher in the North. It is a time of celebration,
sacred to the family. It is marked by gift exchange and feasting.
In addition to these seasonal feasts and rituals, many kindreds also keep holy various days of remembrance and other
festivals, such as the Festival of Runes, Sigrblot, Disablot, and blóts in honor of individual gods, goddesses, or
heroes of our folk. Kindreds may also perform blóts for special needs of a member or members – such as healing
rituals or blots to mark a birth or death in the family.

Ritual Regalia
Ritual tools play an essential role in the practice of Asatrú. The following items have been
approved for use in the Federal Prison system.
The Mead Horn
The horn represents fertility. It is the Ásatrúar connection to
the ancient wells of memory and wisdom. The drinking horn is
the sacred vessel charged by the gothi and its contents are
shared by the kindred when honoring Gods and ancestors.
The Sacrificial Bowl or Bowli
The bowli represents Mother Earth, both the womb and the
tomb. A portion of the sacrificial mead is poured into this
vessel as an offering. It can represent Mimir's Well, where
stored knowledge is contained. The bowli is usually made of
wood, metal, or ceramic material and runes may be carved
upon it.
The Gandr Staff
This ritual item represents the wand or staff of Odin. The 24
Runes of the Elder Futhark are usually carved upon it. These
mystical symbols represent the powers of the universe and of
Nature. This item can be 12" long or as large as a walking
staff. It is always made of wood and is utilized by the gothi in
blótar, runic workings and other rites.
The Ritual Hammer
The ritual hammer, called Mjóllnir, is a vital ritual item used
in all blótar and ritual ceremonies. It is used to hallow and
consecrate. It symbolizes the protection of Thor, patron deity
of hearth and home.
Runes
Runes are a tool used by Asatrúar to communicate with Divine
forces through divinations, galdr or meditation. The runes are
an integral part of Asatrú, as Asafolk seek runic wisdom for
their daily life, inner development, and understanding factors
in their present circumstances. Most runes are carved on
wood, stone, antler or bone.
Other ritual items

Moot Horn
The Moot Horn is used to call the Folk to assembly.
Antlers
Represent strength, fertility and protection. Sacred to the God Freyr.
Sunwheel
Symbol of Odin's Eye. Reminds Asafolk of connection to the Sun and the ever
changing seasons.
Oath Ring
The ring shape reminds Asafolk of the cyclical nature of life and is an important
tool in connecting the kindred.
Also...red, blue and green candles; altar cloth; kindred banner; incense and incense burner; and
prayer oils.
